APB Tip: Even if you hack, you can still suck balls. This one’s titled appropriately. Keep an eye on the one with the golden NTEC and you’ll understand why. I hope G1 gets this guy otherwise my words in the game will ring true, and that would be bad.

A number of independent games stores in the UK have spoken out about retailer-exclusive special editions.

UK Indie Retailers Believe Outlet-Exclusive Special Editions are 'Restrictive Trade'

Skyrim’s special edition package.

It’s a growing problem: retailer-exclusive special editions and preorder incentives mean in some cases that to get the “complete” game experience you effectively need to purchase the game several times. This isn’t even getting into Season Passes, Online Passes and other considerations that come with modern games. The upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, for example, has seven different editions: Standard, Animus, Collector’s, Special. Signature, Ultimate Bundle and Ultimate Edition. Not one of these packages contains all of the possible extras (in-game or physical) that it’s possible to get for the game, meaning that if you want everything, at a bare minimum, you’d need to purchase both an Animus Edition and an Ultimate Bundle.

The problem is further exacerbated by the fact that some of these special editions are restricted to specific retailers, either as preorder incentives or ways to encouraging customers to purchase from a particular outlet. UK trade newspaper MCV reports that independent retailers are becoming increasingly frustrated with this practice, believing it to be “restrictive trade.”

“I was annoyed with the Forza 4 Limited Edition which had extra cars,” Simon Mitchell of indie retailer Eclipse Home Entertainment told the paper. “When my customers found out I didn’t have it, it turned a lot of people away. They left. I would’ve liked the opportunity to buy it. But what I really do want is a level playing field.”

Fortunately, some publishers — at least in the UK — are getting wise to this growing disillusionment that independent retailers are feeling. Tecmo Koei, for example, is releasing a special edition of Disgaea 4 that will only be available to independent retailers, not national chains. The justification? “The indie retail market has been very supportive of this cult series of RPGs over the years, so Tecmo Koei and [distributor] CentreSoft are trying to do their best for the sector this Christmas,” explained Will Curley, Tecmo Koei’s VP of sales and marketing.

Classic Game Room HD reviews HEAVY FIRE: SPECIAL OPERATIONS for Nintendo Wii from the Wii Shop Channel. This download WiiWare game is like Operation Wolf meets Modern Warfare. Set in Somalia, you shoot “terrorists” or something… basically pop up targets that pose a minimal threat. Heavy Fire is an arcade style shooter on rails with predictable gameplay and functioning controls. Play single player or co-op with a friend. Shoot enemies for points but don’t expect much variety in game play, locations or enemies. Heavy Fire is a bare bones budget light gun style shooter that gets the job done for an affordable price, but true arcade gun game aficionados should look elsewhere. This CGR review of Heavy Fire Special Operations on Nintendo Wii has gameplay from Heavy Fire Special Operations Wiiware on Nintendo Wii showing on rails shooter game play.
