If you’re on the lookout for an epic, sprawling space adventure then you could do far worse than check out the bizarre Space Rangers, cheap on GOG today.
When was the last time you played a proper space adventure? I’m not talking of the Mass Effect variety — I’m talking one where you upgrade your ship, buy and sell cargo and find yourself running away from terrifying enemy vessels for the first few hours until you’ve actually made enough money to purchase a gun.
If it’s been a while and you miss those good old days, then you should pop over to Good Old Games today and pick up a copy of Space Rangers for just $ 3.99 while it’s on sale.
Space Rangers, from Russian developer Elemental Games, is a strange and wonderful experience that combines turn-based tactics, real-time arcade combat, text-based quests and Elite-style buying, selling and trading. It features some very clever AI that allows the game world to continue doing its thing even when you’re not directly interacting with it — a feature which some players argue puts Oblivion’s nerfed “Radiant AI” system to shame.
It’s also nightmarishly difficult at the outset, so if Dark Souls isn’t currently punishing you quite enough you may wish to give this one a try.
Sure, its sequel Space Rangers 2 is much better, and the translation from Russian is a little shaky, but for $ 4 you can’t complain too much. Grab it here before 5:59 a.m. EDT tomorrow.
