An upcoming game from independent developer Space Bullet Dynamics Corporation offers an intriguing take on the espionage genre.

Some of you reading this might be old enough to remember the 1993 PC adaptation of Games Workshop’s Space Hulk board game. The computer version was renowned not only for being genuinely terrifying, but also for making use of an innovative split-screen system that allowed one player to take command of an entire squad of Space Marines at once. Few games have followed suit since.

Enter Vancouver-based independent studio Space Bullet Dynamics Corporation and its new game Signal Ops.

Signal Ops challenges players to guide government field agents through a variety of appropriately spyish missions. Agents will plant evidence, steal secrets, assassinate targets and sabotage other agencies for the greater good. So far, so Tom Clancy, you might think — until you look at the distinctive and surprising multiscreen interface of the game.

The interface allows players to see what their whole squad is seeing at once, like a 21st century makeover of the aforementioned Space Hulk. Moreover, it’s possible to take direct control of one agent at a time while simultaneously giving orders to the others — essentially allowing you to play cooperatively with yourself. For those who prefer to cooperate in a more traditional manner, however, it’s also possible to play through the whole game’s campaign with friends.

The developers cite classic titles Commandos, Syndicate and Deus Ex as key inspirations for the game. Missions are structured in an open manner, so there’s no one set linear path by which to accomplish objectives. It looks like a very interesting take on a genre which can easily feel very stale.

Space Bullet Dynamic Corporation hasn’t long launched its official website and has only just announced the game, so it may be a while before it sees release. The team is currently seeking $ 10,000 of funding via the IndieGoGo website, with a variety of rewards on offer for those willing to donate anywhere between $ 5 and $ 5,000. The $ 10,000 will be spent on hiring a level artist, vocal talent and a musician to make the game as polished as possible. Any extra funds will be used to develop additional multiplayer modes.

Find out more about this intriguing game on the official website.

The debut game from new Swedish developer ThreeGates looks set to tickle the fancy of anyone who enjoyed the co-op action RPGs of the PS2 era.

Aethereus to Offer Dark Alliance Inspired Co-Op Action

Swedish developer ThreeGates, formed last year from a band of experienced industry veterans, has announced its first project. Aethereus promises to appeal to those who enjoyed the co-op RPGs of the past with a contemporary PC game sheen.

“Aethereus is the first title to show what ThreeGates is looking to do with co-op games,” said Don Geyer, CEO of the company. “With the Diablo, Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance and Champions of Norrath series setting the standard, there’s a lot of interest in games that enable smaller groups of players to get together and have a really compelling game experience without being in a full MMO world. While a lot of the development community is moving to social games and free to play games, we know we’ve got a game that many gamers will appreciate.”

Aethereus features both PvP and co-op play with four character classes to choose from. Players each have their own customizable “Nexus” city state where they can buy, trade and build items only available in that specific area — the more friends you play with, the more different items you can acquire for your characters Vain types will also appreciate the opportunity to decorate their city-state with statues in the likeness of their characters.

The game also features a customizable Combat Arena mode. Here, players can take on each other in PvP combat, or go up against player-designed challenges created from beasts and traps captured in cooperative PvE play. And speaking of the PvE play, it’s all procedurally generated, allowing for a different experience each time. There’s also a full crafting system allowing players to design their own armor, weapons, traps and other inventions for use in the field or their Combat Arena.

The game will be unveiled to the public for the first time at Gamescom later this month.

Lots of games have co-op modes, but not all of them truly encourage meaningful cooperation and teamwork. Two (or more) guns are always better than one, but the games on this list go beyond mere strength in numbers by brute force. These are games that prove that two brains can be better than one too, and that sometimes lending an assist to your friend can be just as satisfying as getting the kill yourself…
