“Goddess of Victory and Peace” (Explore #426 June 29, 2011)

The 21-foot tall bronze statue "Goddess of Victory and Peace," atop the Pennsylvania Memorial in Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania. The statue, made from melted down civil war cannons, was crafted by Samuel Murray in 1909-10. The huge Pennsylvania Memorial is the largest monument in the park, and visitors can climb 55 spiral stairs to reach the balcony near the top, which is where I shot this from.
The July 1-3, 1863 Battle of Gettysburg was the bloodiest encounter of America’s Civil War, with 51,000 casualties, and today it is one of the nation’s most visited historic shrines.
You can visit this National Park Unit at www.nps.gov/gett.

The Elmwood Club

A beautiful example of Second Empire architecture, this building on Main Street Douglas, Massachusetts was build in 1865 as offices for the Douglas Axe Company. It later passed to the Hayward Woolen Company which gave it to the community for use as a recraetion center called the Elmwood Club. It had pool tables and televisions and became a popular gathering place. During this time, The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees played a game on the Douglas baseball field in commemoration of the town’s anniversary. The game was sponsored by the mill owner who let the Elmwood be used by the players.
It has been used as the location of various resturants since 1983 and is the current location of the Picket Fence.
