If it seemed like not
much an official fanfare was being made of the triumphant return of Sonic CD in
the form of an XBLA port, perhaps that’s only because the game’s new audience is much
wider than that. Sega has announced that the game will be making it to pretty
much every platform you give a damn about by the end of the year, unless you
give a damn about something that’s not XBLA, PSN, PC, iPhone, iPad, Android or
Windows Phone. Notable by its exception is the platform plenty of people still
technically give a damn about, the Wii. Is the Sega/Nintendo enmity making a
late comeback? (No)…

To mark its arrival at
PAX Prime, Bethesda has released a new trailer for id Sotware’s upcoming
role-play shooter, Rage. The clip takes you through the structure of a typical
mission, from the initial assignment to shootouts in enemy territory. Based
around the Gearheads, Rage’s most technology-focused bandit clan, this mission
offers a look at some of the game’s steampunk-style tech, including deployable
spider-guns and enemy jetpacks that can be used to player advantage…

THQ’s Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine has a demo ready for downloading, and the
company’s chosen to mark the occasion with something a bit different from the
usual bombast: a chat with vocal lead Mark Strong. You probably know Strong as
the “That Guy” actor called in whenever a movie needs a gravel-voiced
Englishman to be dastardly (Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes, Green Lantern) – but
as this clip explains, the actor was eager to step into a role that allowed him
to play the hero for a change. Apparently it’s just his face that’s the epitome
of ruthless British underhandedness? Take a look and see if Strong really looks
all that evil to you…

The anticipation of getting to grips with a new SSX was palpable. We were so excited to get a look at the new online functions in Ridernet – SSX’s version of NFS: Hot Pursuit’s Autolog mode – and to see the new Alaska level that we even shamelessly push in front of a now irate French man. Merde, indeed, monsieur. Anyway, squeezing into the tiny room at EA’s Gamescom booth was well worth the wrath of one man.

At Gamescom, Digital Extremes gave us another taste of what’s in store for Jackie Estacado in The Darkness II, and holy shit, it’s ultra-violent. We’re shown the Hellgate Field amusement park level where Jackie is off to track down some good-for-nothing named Viktor and his gang called The Brotherhood. This new pack of enemies aren’t the usual fodder that Jackie and his death dealing tentacles are used to, no sir. These guys know that throwing in flash grenades, turning on lights and generally making the place look less bleak with any illumination they can find, removes the darkness powers from the moody hero.

Ubisoft is backing away from plans to saddle PC Driver: San Francisco players with restrictive DRM – but just barely. Responding to backlash over its initial decision to make the open world driving game unplayable without a constant internet connection, the studio stated it will be switching to a less demanding DRM system whereby players will only have to log online once at the beginning of the game to prove they aren’t dirty ruthless pirates…

Goldeneye 007: Reloaded has been leaking a lot of information to the press. Following yesterday’s trailer, which revealed the special objective-based MI6 mode, comes a large set of new screenshots that show off the sharper visuals you can expect from the re-mastered version coming to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. While the Wii game Reloaded is based on didn’t look bad by any means, the newly HD-ized iteration of GoldenEye looks downright flashy – that’s great for fans of the game, but we think Mr. Bond would try to exercise a bit more discretion…

There may soon be a day when GameStop beams its wares directly to your dashboard. A day in mid-2012, to be precise. This week, the brick and mortar video game retailer announced that it has started beta testing its own PS3 and Xbox 360 game streaming service, with plans invite US gamers to the pre-party later this year.

GameStop’s entry into the video game streaming market follows its acquition of the Texas based streaming technology firm Spawn Labs back in April. In 2009, Spawn Labs earned some geek press after introducing the HD-720, a set-top device which allowed gamers to play PS3 or Xbox 360 games through a web-enabled PC. The device ran on Spawn Labs’ proprietary streaming software client, and it is this technology which GameStop has been tinkering with to stream games to smart phones, PCs and now consoles…
